![]() ![]() The movie kicks off with a candy-colored jitterbug contest: a sure sign, if earlier Lynch endeavors are anything to go by, that we are heading for the exact opposite-something hairy, slothful, and grim. ![]() If "Joy Ride" is the snitty younger brother, cracking jokes, "Mulholland Drive" is the big sister of the two-lush, confident, and happy to guard its secrets. Is there still a place, or a time, for film noir? The question arises because of two new releases, David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive" and John Dahl's "Joy Ride." Each is set in the present, yet both feel restless and constrained, casting their jealous eyes back to earlier periods of paranoia.
